Meta ads cost for a service business is not one number. It is three: what Meta charges to show your ad, what a click costs, and what a lead costs. The only figure that decides whether the ads are worth it is a fourth one that never appears in the ad dashboard: what a booked, attended, paying customer costs you.
This guide gives you the current US benchmarks for service industries, explains how the pricing works, covers what we could and could not find for the UK, and ends with a calculator that turns cost per lead into cost per customer. If you are also asking why paid ads keep getting more expensive, that article covers the bigger trend.
How Meta ads pricing works
Facebook and Instagram sell ad space through an auction. You set a budget, Meta decides who sees your ad, and the price you pay depends on how many other advertisers want the same people and how well people respond to your ad. Three numbers come out of that.
CPM: the cost of being seen
CPM is the cost per 1,000 impressions. It is the base price of attention, and it rises when competition rises, for example around Black Friday or in expensive categories such as finance and healthcare.
CPC: the cost of a click
CPC is what you pay per click. It is driven by CPM and by how often people click: the more people click, the lower the CPC. Strong creative lowers CPC without you touching the budget.
CPL: the cost of a lead
CPL is what you pay per enquiry. By definition it equals the cost per click divided by the share of clicks that turn into leads, so a better offer, a shorter form or a faster page lowers it just as better creative does. In the US data below, the average lead campaign converted 8.54% of clicks into leads.
Meta ads cost by industry (US)
These are the most recent published figures we could verify for lead-generation campaigns, from LocaliQ's Facebook benchmark page, updated September 2026. They are averages across US-style campaigns, not a promise for your account.
| Industry | Cost per click | Click to lead | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal services | $1.62 | 6.61% | $38.09 |
| Home & home improvement | $2.18 | 5.32% | $42.95 |
| Beauty & personal care | $2.97 | 5.63% | $50.91 |
| Dentists & dental services | $5.70 | 6.07% | $61.56 |
| Physicians & surgeons | $1.68 | 6.41% | $32.14 |
| Health & fitness | $1.84 | 7.98% | $27.11 |
| Real estate | $1.27 | 9.95% | $13.74 |
| All industries (average) | $1.80 | 8.54% | $27.39 |
Two things stand out. First, dental is the most expensive category here, with a cost per click of $5.70 and a cost per lead of $61.56, while real estate and fitness are among the cheapest. Second, lead cost tracks how high-value and how competitive the service is, not how good the agency is. Legal and finance only have traffic-campaign figures in this dataset (about $0.69 and $0.86 per click), so we do not quote a cost per lead for them.
Meta ads cost in the UK
This is where we want to be straight with you: we could not find a reliable, published UK benchmark for cost per lead by industry, and we are not going to invent one. What we did find is one agency's blended estimate for Q1 2026: Facebook CPMs of $8.40 to $13.60 in the UK against $10.50 to $16.80 in the US, with Instagram slightly higher than Facebook in both. That points to UK media being somewhat cheaper, roughly a fifth on the midpoint.
It is an estimate from a single agency, not an audited dataset, and CPM is only the first number in the chain. Our advice for UK businesses is to use the US figures above as a planning ceiling, run the ads for two weeks, and replace the benchmark with your own cost per lead. After that you are working from your data, which beats any average.
What drives your Meta ads cost up or down
Your industry and audience
High-ticket and regulated services pay more for the same attention because more advertisers chase the same people. A small local radius also raises costs, because the audience Meta can learn from is smaller.
Creative quality and freshness
Creative does the targeting now. Ads that people stop for earn cheaper clicks, and the same ad shown for too long gets more expensive as the audience tires of it. Fresh, varied creative is the cheapest lever you have.
The offer
"Book a consultation" is a weak offer. A specific outcome with a clear next step (a free assessment, a fixed-price package, a limited slot) earns more leads from the same clicks, which lowers cost per lead without changing the media price.
What happens after the click
A slow form, a confusing page or a late reply wastes the money you already spent. In our experience, replying within minutes with an automatic message and a booking link recovers leads that would otherwise cool down, which is why our systems send an instant text with a calendar link.
Season and competition
Costs usually climb in the fourth quarter, when advertisers compete for holiday demand. If you can, build your audience and creative testing in quieter months.
From cost per lead to cost per customer
A lead in your inbox is not revenue. Some leads never answer, some book and then do not show up (we cover that in how to reduce no-shows), and only the ones who attend and pay count. Put your own numbers into the calculator and watch the real cost per customer appear.
Cost per customer calculator
Illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast. The starting values are placeholders (a $43 lead is close to the US home-improvement average). Replace them with your own.
How much should you budget?
Start from the customers you want, not from a round number. The table shows what different monthly budgets would produce under the same assumptions as the calculator ($43 per lead, half of leads booking, 80% of bookings attending). Your numbers will differ.
| Monthly ad spend | Leads | Attended customers | Cost per customer |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | 35 | 14 | $108 |
| $3,000 | 70 | 28 | $108 |
| $5,000 | 116 | 47 | $108 |
| $10,000 | 233 | 93 | $108 |
Pure arithmetic on stated assumptions. It excludes creative production, management and your follow-up costs, which you should budget for separately.
If the cost per customer is higher than what a customer is worth, fix the offer, the follow-up or the booking process before you raise the budget. More spend on a leaking funnel only makes the leak more expensive.
6 ways to lower your cost per lead
1Sharpen the offer
Replace "contact us" with a specific, time-bound outcome. A clear offer lifts the click-to-lead rate, which is half of the cost-per-lead equation.
2Test several creatives, not one
Run different angles and formats side by side (video, static, testimonial) and retire the losers. Our practical guide to Meta ads for contractors shows how we structure that for a service business.
3Use a form that filters
One or two qualifying questions raise cost per lead on paper and lower cost per customer in practice, because fewer time-wasters reach your calendar.
4Reply instantly and let people self-book
Send an automatic text with a booking link the moment a lead arrives. Speed protects the money you have already spent, and it frees your team from chasing.
5Retarget and reactivate
People who visited, clicked or enquired before are cheaper to win back than strangers. Reactivation of lapsed clients costs far less than a new cold lead.
6Track to the booked customer
Report cost per booked and attended customer, not just cost per lead. Optimising the dashboard number can quietly make your real results worse.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Meta ads cost per month for a service business?
There is no fixed price, because the budget is set by what you want to buy, not by Meta. Work backwards: decide how many new customers you want, divide your monthly spend by the customers you expect, and check that the cost per customer is below what a customer is worth. As an illustration, at a US-style $43 cost per lead with half of leads booking and 80% attending, $3,000 a month buys about 28 attended customers. Replace those assumptions with your own.
What is a good cost per lead on Facebook?
In US data published by LocaliQ in September 2026, the average across industries was $27.39 per lead, and the service categories in this article ranged from $13.74 (real estate) to $61.56 (dental). A good cost per lead is one that still leaves you profitable after the lead has been booked, has turned up and has paid. A $60 lead that becomes a high-value patient can beat a $15 lead that never answers the phone.
Are Facebook and Instagram ads cheaper in the UK than in the US?
Probably somewhat on CPM. One agency's aggregated Q1 2026 estimates put UK Facebook CPMs at $8.40 to $13.60 against $10.50 to $16.80 in the US. We could not find a reliable published UK benchmark for cost per lead by industry, so use the US figures as a ceiling for planning and replace them with your own numbers after the first two weeks of data.
Why is my cost per lead higher than these benchmarks?
The usual causes are a weak or generic offer, creative that has gone stale, a form or landing page that converts poorly, and a small local audience. Benchmarks are also averages: some categories in the source rest on only a handful of campaigns, so a single industry figure can move a lot from one year to the next. Compare yourself with your own previous month first, and the benchmark second.
Should a service business use Meta ads or Google ads?
Most test both, because they do different jobs. Google mostly catches people who are already searching for your service, while Meta puts your offer in front of people who were not looking yet, which makes the creative and the offer matter more. If you only have budget for one, start with the channel closest to the moment of need for your service and measure cost per booked customer on both.
